March - Disability Awareness Month

Disability month icon

The month of March is Disability Awareness Month at IATP. We take this time to discuss with staff and students the aspects of disability that strengthen their involvement in the community. Through a strength-based approach, students lead the conversation on what their disability means to them, what the disability may offer, and how to go about disclosing aspects of their disability with others as well as the benefits of doing so in certain settings. Students write or create art pieces to express themselves and engage in the curriculum.  They benefit from explicit instruction designed yo help them learn how to discuss disability with others, and what it can mean for them in their adult lives. Let us coordinate our efforts in the school and home settings to have these conversations together in order to reinforce student's self-determination in their lives, We are proud of all that our students do all year long and take this time to dive in deeper.
